Satelliet-Browns’ Design Challenge breaks new ground Students are being urged to think out of the box when they enter the prestige Satelliet-Browns Student Design Challenge 2008. The competition is open to all UK interior design students. The brief is to produce exciting and innovative designs featuring furnishings from the Satelliet-Browns 2008 catalogue for a modern cocktail bar - one of the most progressive areas of interior design. This year for the first time ever, the students are being challenged to include the exterior design, with topical elements such as furnished gardens or patios for smokers. The event is co-sponsored by Satelliet-Browns, leading supplier of furnishings for the leisure industry, along with Italian furniture manufacturer Perali, Bar08 and Theme Magazine. The winning portfolios will be displayed on the Satelliet-Browns stand at Bar 08 at Earls Court which will be attended by around 10,000 people including the industry’s top designers, architects and bar and restaurant owners. The design of the company’s stand will be influenced by the winning entry. Harvey Ockrim, Joint MD of Satelliet-Browns said: “We are passionate about design. “We believe it is absolutely essential to encourage young and talented designers to take an interest in our industry through competitions like the Satelliet-Browns Student Design Challenge.” “It is a tremendous opportunity for them to showcase their talents to leading figures in the bar and restaurant industry, and perhaps to get their careers off to a flying start. “From Satelliet-Browns’ point of view it is really exciting to see such a fresh approach to designs featuring our extensive range of interior and exterior tables, chairs and bar furnishings.” The entries will be judged by some of the leading names in UK Bar design, such as Paul Daly, Shaun Clarkson, Matt Rawlinson and Rock Galpin. The judging panel will also include 2006 winner Marcello Martino. Marcello 30, said: “Entering the competition was a fantastic opportunity for me because I wanted to go into bar design when I graduated. “My win brought me into contact with all sorts of interesting people, and it meant I started working as junior interior designer the day after I finished my course.” Entries must be received by March 31, 2008.
